Basset Artesian-Norman

The Basset Artesian-Norman is a pack dog at first. Excellent hunter, it is the perfect dog for rabbit hunting. With a body longer than it is tall, it has the qualities of courage, obstinacy, and resourcefulness. It is intelligent, very lively and its mimics make it an irresistible dog. The Basset Artesian-Norman has become a real pet. He hates solitude and will quickly lose interest if he does not have the necessary company. He is affectionate, gentle, cheerful, and enjoys the presence of children, with whom he will play until he no longer wants to.

History of the breed

The Basset Artesian-Norman was born in the 1870s. It is the result of a cross between the Basset de Normandie and the Basset d'Artois, at the time of the first French Bassets. The former focused on creating a utility dog with straight forelegs (the Artois) while the latter favored a dog with crooked forelegs (the Normand). The name Basset Artesian-Normand was not born until the beginning of the 20th century.

25 years after the creation of the first standard (1898), the breed was made official in 1924. Gradually, the breed was introduced in England and the United States. The International Cynological Federation recognized the Basset Artesian-Norman on October 29, 1963.

Physical characteristics

Its body: It has a long, well planted and compact body Its croup is a little inclined.

Its coat: The Basset Artesian-Norman has a short, short, and tight coat. Nevertheless, it is not particularly fine.

His color: It is generally tricolored with a dominant fawn color and a black and white coat. Nevertheless, the black can sometimes be absent, which gives a bicolor Basset (fawn and white).

Head: The skull is of medium width and the stop has a break at the forehead. The nose is wide and black while the muzzle is of equivalent length to that of the skull.

Eyes: They are oval, large, and dark.

Ears: The Basset Artesian-Norman has low set, flexible and fine ears. They are very long and end at a point.

Tail: It is long and carried in saber.
